Priceless Offer
Those of you that have been around for a while know that I've recently had a very large upset concerning my parents. My Mother is now in a nursing home and on hospice care. She is 'terminal' but unlike I thought a couple months ago she will be around for a bit longer. Though she is going a bit stir crazy for something to do. One of the things she's always been amazing at is needlework. Crewel embroidery to be specific (I have several amazing framed pieces of hers). Earlier last week she was talking about wanting to do something with a single, or maybe two colors so she doesn't have to do so much thread sorting. Instantly the above pattern popped into my head andI asked her if she'd be willing to embroider on a dress I make. She said yes!
Its one of my vintage 40's patterns that still has the transfers, which are too old to work but I could trace on to the fabric. I showed it to her and she said that it'd be a lovely thing to work on. I went SQUEE!
I'm thinking I want it in a dark linen (probably black, maybe navy blue?) with white thread. If she's willing maybe a second dress in green, with red embroidery, for Christmas. :D
So what about you, dear readers? Would you jump on an offer like this? I think it would be nice to make the dresses extra special, couture even.

I think that is a lovely thing to do! It will keep your mum happy and give you something to treasure. I'm so sorry for what your going through. I had a grandmother with a similar situation and also worked in a care home so I understand how hard this is. Keep strong and were all thinking of you :)

Wow, that would be an amazing piece. Really amazing.
ReplyDelete@Stevie, thank you for the encouraging words.
ReplyDelete@Tanit-Isis, I think now that I've done up the sort hum-drum dress I'm ready to tackle this slightly more complicated one. Getting the fit to look nice. And I'm leaning toward a black linen for the dress. And maybe a green faille or crepe wool for the green/red Christmas version.
But first, my cropped jacket and a few other pieces for my impending trip to NYC.
i hope you took mom up on her offer. it would be an heirloom, really, and more importantly it would make you both happy!
