Vogue 8747 - A Classic Princess Seam Blouse

This is my Hautey Bitch look.

I really must sing the praises of this blouse. Vogue 8747 is from the "Basic Pattern Custom Fit" line, and I think I'm in love with these. Its built on their standard block, with most of the bust adjustment done for you. The two major changes on my part were large upper arms for the sleeves and rounded upper back adjustment. This is my second make. I also did a plain black one, but did not photograph it.

These trousers were given to me by a friend that had lost a great deal of weight after surgery. I love them to bits but they are getting kinda threadbare. I will probably use them to help draft a new pair.

I also really like how this goes with my floral bolero.

Hmmm. Hair stuck under the jacket. My mojo seems to have taken a hiatus. I did make a raglan t-shirt for Simon out of narwhal fabric, which he quite loves. I still have to finish it. I want to make a skirt or two for work then get cracking on my raincoats.

Ok, well. That's all folks! Until next time.

Cake Projects

Wow, where to start? Well, first of all I had a very rough week at work. My daytime coworker moved to another department so I'm doing a double load of work. I've done this job long enough that I can do it but it stresses me out like mad. People are being interviewed so I'll have a trainee soon. Again, I mostly like my job and as rough as the 12 hour days are I like that four days off every other week (work 3, off four, work four, off three), though I'm still wearing the house wife hat on my days off. I know I don't normally talk about that stuff, here, but its a major reason for my lack of posting. I'm attempting to get into a frame of mind where I schedule my days off to be more efficient so I can have time to spend with family and friends. I'm thinking that Thursdays will be my "I'm sleeping in" days (think 10am). Though getting up at 8am is sleeping in when you get up at 4am on a work day.

But hey, you probably want to know what I've been working on. Well of course I've been talking about Vogue 8747.  I finally finished it and I'm wearing it now as I type this (at work... shhhhh, don't tell). I didn't get photos of me in it because hamming it up in front of a camera wan't on my list of things to do. I did take a photo of the finished product.

I should probably pick my socks up off the floor. And vacuum. Meh.

The back of this blouse fits me better than the dress form. See previous rants about my shoulders.

Buttons and Fabric Vogue 8747
So, I love this blouse enough I already have a second one cut out. And I'm using these pretty buttons from the stash I inherited from my mother. I love that I have things like this as a constant reminder of her.

Even though I cut out the fabric I didn't feel like something so intense, so I threw together a few items for Felicity. First up was a raglan T-shirt. I made the pattern from a defunct RTW shirt, and she loves these things even though they are like totally easy.

Mom, really?

Next up was the PJ pants I cut out a couple weeks ago. They are PJ pants so I' not sure how much else I can say about that. She was happy about them, too. And the kitties are wearing bowties, cause bowties are cool now.

She was wearing this when her Grandma came to pick her up, apparently they had something to do at church in the morning.

Inspired By...

Source: jpeterman.com via Lady on Pinterest

Some time ago I saw this skirt in J.Peterman catalog and I promptly pinned it to my "Inspiration" board. I decided I wanted some sort of plaid flannel skirt with lace trimmed lining peaking out from underneath. Considering the amount of money we've been having to sink into house/car maintenance of late I've had a limited fabric(and shoe) budget. However, Fabric.com in their omniscience* sent me a coupon after I had placed fabric in my cart then took it out. Then they had a sale on cotton flannel. It was a win/win.

For the pattern I used the a-line skirt from Vogue 8679 (All the patterns aside from the jacket in this envelope are wardrobe work horses that are easy to make. I HIGHLY recommend you pick it up during the next 3.99 sale.) which is the same as my red linen skirt. This time I decided that I would put the zipper in the center back and add pockets to the side seams. I used a generic pocket piece from a Simplicity pattern. I didn't really thing to take a lot of photos.  I do have one of the lace I'm using, reclaimed from a defunct steampunk costume.

I also have a photo of it hanging, which probably won't be news to those of you that have Instagram.

Pardon the towel on the floor, I put it there under my drying laundry tree to catch drips. I also use that tree for hanging works in progress. I need to find a link to it and share, its the best $20ish bucks I've spent in a while, as it folds and collapses and fits in the closet, easy peasy. Anywho. (update, you can get it on Amazon here)

So, reclaimed lace, on sale flannel, and lining in this skirt. The lining, a bemberg rayon, was the most expensive part of the endeavor. I'd say materials costs were around $25 dollars, the inspiration skirt retailed for about $109 on sale, though it seems preliminary to tell you this now when I haven't finished the thing yet.  I stupidly serged my seam allowances BEFORE putting in the zipper. DOH! I can fix it, but it meant not getting it done for this work week. Which brings me to another point, my work wardrobe. I'm really needing to rethink what I'm sewing now that I'm working on the day shift. Its I.T. corporate casual which means acres of kaki pants and blue polo shirts for the men. Women its a bit more open to interpretation and I find some of my old staples to be threadbare or not quite right in fit. So I'm working on TNT patterns.

First up, the button blouse for shirting weight fabrics:

I'm doing  sz 18 view B in a D cup fit. I graded the waist and hips from an 18 to a 20, did a full bicep adjustment, and a rounded upper back adjustment. I have a feeling my first muslin will reveal I need a sway back adjustment, but I didn't want to make that one yet. Once that's done I already have four different fabrics picked out, one of which is my Hello Kitty Liberty of London. I'll fill you in on the other TNT's as I get to them.

So, on to other stuff. I had my CT scan, no results back as of yet.The chalky white stuff they had me drink prior to the test played havoc on my digestive tract. I'll spare the details, but it was not pleasant. I've had to eliminate scrambled eggs from my diet, too. I can eat them in other things, and I'm having to limit dairy and coffee. Small amounts of fruit seem to be OK. Its a process of trial and error at this point.

vintage thimble find

The other sour note of the week was Simon damaging his (mine, really, had it since high school, 1992) flute. He dropped it in band class, got it wedged between instrument lockers and then bending it badly when "yanking" it out. I completely lost my shit when he showed me, to the point where Simon was cowering in his room crying (I sent him there so I wouldn't hit him) and husband taking me to the repair shop, pointing out  that I was in no state to drive. We walked through the antique store next door which I always find to be a calming thing. I managed to find the PERFECT ceramic thimble, to which the ladies at the check out were surprised when I said I planned to use it for actual sewing. In any case, by the time we got back home and ordered pizza, I was calmed down, Simon apologized and promised to be more careful in the future. It really was an accident on his part, but an avoidable one. He doesn't think about his surrounding enough. The repair is going to be about $30 so I foresee some yard work in his future. Mama's flower beds need tending.

*I totally forgot to add this at the end. I almost applied for the sys admin job at fabric.com last year but I couldn't take the hit on insurance, and I was lacking a few skills they needed. That said, if you wonder how they know about browsing and sending coupons, the answer is tracking cookies. If you have an account and have logged in from a computer and then go back to the page, it logs it and sends it to a database that goes "hey, send them a coupon".  Because retail psychology (yes, that's a real degree/area of study) says it works. And it does.

Let's Talk Business

Or rather, business casual. Except I don't really do casual so well. Its funny, I work for a large telecommunications company in the NOC (network operations center) and on third shift.  Up until about a month ago almost everyone except me would wear jeans and a nice looking shirt.   But now we're in a shiny new building right next to Head Quarters and you should have heard the engineers.  "Now I have to go buy a whole new wardrobe!".

I just kinda chuckled.  I don't really need to change much in dress, though I do desperately need more basic separates.  Skirts with pockets and some nice blouses.

Vogue 8747
I believe I've settled on this one for turning into a TNT blouse.  Princess seams plus ABCD sizing looks to be the easiest to fit and give me many variations.  The latest Threads even has a tutorial on adding a button placket to this specific pattern! Win all around.  My fabric choices, however, are a little on the rebellious side.  I have my eye on the Goth Bunny fabric on Spoonflower, and of course the Hello Kitty L.O.L Tana Lawn I pre-ordered, not to mention the one I got in NYC.

I like dressing up but since now I HAVE to... well let's just say I gotta be me.  For the bottom half of my wardrobe update I have two patterns.  The first of which is Colette's Beignet, which I'll be using some black rayon suiting from Fabric.com.

I also have a wool/rayon blend small plaid suiting that I intend to make a pencil skirt out of with Vogue 8672, but without the ruching. View A, to be precise.

So that's what I have on the top of my priority list for work sewing.  Then its on to making vacation clothes for the kids!  My blue gingham maxi is done and I absolutely adore it. Will probably wear it everywhere this summer.  Going to try and get photos this weekend to put up for you.  And stay tuned, next I'm going to post the "power dresses" and sporty jackets I have planned to round out my work wardrobe.
